| "Real-practice clinical trials after product approval"
is the title under which the 3rd symposium of the Coordination Centres for Clinical Trials will be held. Real-practice research examines whether the trial results, which were gained on a very limited number of patients, also hold up in day-to-day clinical practice. This approach takes account of all patient-related, organisational and system-based factors and processes which can have a significant effect on the implementation of innovation within medical treatment. There is often a lack of direct comparison between drugs approved to treat the same condition (so-called "head-to-head trials"). This often means that physicians practice in a knowledge vacuum. The pharmaceutical industry shows very little interest in "head-to-head trials", which is why studies with an aim to optimise therapy currently lie within the domain of research-driven clinical research. Such trials offer substantial benefits to both patients and the health care system. In order to execute them successfully, researches have to overcome challenges relating to design, practical implementation, personnel and financial resources. We would like to discuss these issues in depth with you on the second day of the symposium. On the first day, keeping with tradition, we will address key national and international developments within the field and elucidate the practical aspects of implementing clinical trials by drawing on experts from home and abroad. I look forward to lively debates and hereby extend this warm welcome to attend our symposium and thus contribute towards its success.
